Pan’s Labrynth

Pans Labyrinth I mentioned Pan’s Labyrinth - Guillermo del Toro’s next film - back in June and mentionerd that I liked the sound of it.

The film is described as a “horror-fantasy” and tells the the story of a young girl living in Franco’s Spain who prefers to live in an imaginary world of her own creation than face the real world. Over the course of the film, she learns to deal with post-war Fascist repression - at its height in rural Spain - and come to terms with that through a fable of her own.

We’ve had the teaser for a while now and, although it doesn’t tell you much (not unexpectedly for a teaser), it looks spectacular - certainly more than enough to whet my appetite.

And the full trailer has been online for a couple of weeks. It’s in Spanish and Shockwave but still well worth seeing. The trailer, more so than the teaser, also manages to convey quite strongly that, for all the surreal fantasy of the imagery, the film is grounded in very real events.

i saw pans last night at fright fest in leister sq in london. knowing nothing about the movie apart from it’s an adult fairy tale. it is fantastic.i saw this movie with three friends and we were all in awe. we viewed another movie an hour later(as part of the festival) yet after the second movie pans labrynth was all we spoke about.
it is not a horror as such, its the horror of the real world during the civil war that makes this film unapropaite for kids yet the fantasy elements are quite jaw dropping.
to try to explain how powerful this movie is i quote my friend “i don’t normally do subtitled films but within half hour id forgotten i was watching a foriegn film.
this movie truly is an experience, though alas it will never reach the status it deserves as most people are to lazy to even try to watch a subtitled movie.
as soon as this comes out on dvd i will buy several copies to promote this movie as much as i can, it’s a masterpiece in cinema.

My boyfriend and I watched it at home on our comp one night and we both fell in love! I’d even go as far as to say it’s the best movie I’ve seen all year! I agree with Conal, I’ll be buying this movie and passing it out! Love it!

I’ve just got home from having seen this. It’s an incredible film and really moving.

I will also be rushing out to buy this on DVD as soon as it’s released just so I can experience it all over again.

    Fantastic, fantastic film.

We also just went to see Pan and didn’t know a thing about it going in, we just picked it cuz the time was right. We were so enthralled with the story and effects that we too will be talking about this movie for a long time. We mostly watch American made movies but the movie-making style of this film will make us seek out more foreign films. This story was heart-wrenching and human so beatuiful and sad all at the same time. If you are looking for a refreshing change, I encourage you to see this film.

I just got home right now from watching this film ,and already I’ve been raving about it with a friend online. As a fan of Hellboy, I came across an article a few months back about Guillermo Del Toro (who directed Hellboy, the movie), and he casually mentioned Pan’s Labryinth and what it was about. i though I’d see it when it cam out, and when I was watching the movie trailer, I knew it was going to be good. Having watched it now, i was just utterly enthralled with it. I guess the audience who watched it with me tonight agrees, because everybody was just so drawn in; there wasn’t even a single pesky moviegoer, and that says a lot with a theater full of teenagers. I liked it even more than the Hellboy movie, and that’s also saying a lot since i’m nuts about Hellboy. This by far is Guillermo’s best work. From the story itself, to the direction, to the acting (and casting), and of course visual effects, everything was tempered in excellent execution; even the fact that it was in spanish was a good call, and added more authenticity to the movie. Just like in The Lord of the Rings, the SFX did not get in the way of the movie, but helped it beautifully to tell the story. Bravo to Guillermo Del toro and to Pan’s Labryinth, i highly recommend this instant classic to everyone.

Saw this movie this past weekend here in the states and fell in love with it. It truly mesmerizes and absorbs you with the great characters. From the nicest people one could hope to meet to the cruelest of villians. The effects were wonderful and not overpowering.

This is what Narnia should have been like. The story is intense and brutal at times. There is a scene that is one of the creepiest I’ve enjoyed in a film in quite a long time…but I won’t spoil it.

DEFINTIELY go see this movie! I can’t wait to buy it on DVD.

My boyfriend and I were so excited to see such an intriguing trailer, but the movie blew the trailer away. I have never been so pleasantly surprised. It had just a touch of everything I love in a movie, passion, horror, sadness, fantacy…without making any part too over done or corney. Beautifully done!

I think that it’s the attention to detail that makes this film so great. The horrific 1944-Spain reality scenes are similar in effect to Schindlar’s List and the fantasy ( for those that have a problem with it–in her head, or is it? ) scenes are so finely created that they remind me a bit of Gilliam, E.T., Wizard of Oz, Lord of the Rings and, perhaps Disney’s Pinnochio since so much of the fantasy scenes seem painted.

The entire film is classy and stylish, like an old Hammer film, or a Polanski film.
It just shows how ignorant some people are if they can’t handle subtitles! If a movie is cinematic, you become lost and forget the language is different; it’s your language now. Besides, don’t these people read books?

it’s a great film. A true classic that will rank with his Devil’s Backbone.

I talk about this movie with all of my friends, but they say that they can’t handle thrillers. It’s beautiful story, and also perfectly done. They don’t know what they’re missing out on.

I just finished watching it on dvd. The fantasy parts were lovely, but, since they didn’t work easily with the brutality of the facists it wasn’t apparent just where her coping skills HAD to have the fantasy and where it eched her.

I can’t describe in words how moved I was by this film. I though Hellboy sucked! If you haven’t seen the movie and you’re worried that it might be like Hellboy, this is entirely different. I truly believed that this was Ofelia’s way of coping but how wonderfully portrayed it all was. I’m not a fan of gore either but the violent gore scenes were necessary for understanding of that period. I don’t know what else to say. I watched it a week ago and i can’t stop thinking about it. I will be looking forward to Del Toro’s next film for sure!

I had never heard of this movie before I watched it with a friend, and spent the half an hour before watching it complaining it was in Spanish and we wouldn’t be interested.
I was completley wrong, I was completley enthralled, much like everyone else in the room, who like me had been complaining. It was one of the best movies I have ever seen.

Just finshed watching this movie, absolutely magical and mystical. the subtitles are not a problem as the film flows like a magical stream. In the end on earth she may have died, but her soul lives forever. Beautiful

So I just finished watching the movie and the first thing that comes to mind is:

“I want my $3.75 back, Blockbuster!” Before even watching the movie, I was ‘warned’ by the clerk at the movie store that it was in Spanish only, “but it’s a good movie” she says. Thirty seconds talking to the clerk made me realize that her idea of “good” probably wasn’t very good at all. Sure enough, I right. Ok…the fairytale was nice….the idea of the war was nice….even the idea that the captain only wanted a son was nice….but does EVERY SINGLE person in the movie HAVE TO be a complete idiot? How many times did Ophelia get told NOT to eat anything?!? Mercedes gives a key to her brother and KNOWS that he’s going to use it but still goes back. Pedro uses the key but instead of damaging the lock (or just taking it) so no one suspects his sister, he leaves it there for the captain to find. And what does it take to kill the captain?! Stabbed in the chest twice, in the back twice, his cheek sliced open, AND poisoned!! WTF! Oh..and let us not forget about poor Ophelia’s mother who blames ALL of her problems on her unborn baby who’s constantly “being bad”. Give me a break! There’s a reason why this movie is in spanish with subtitles. (ie. It’s such complete garbage that no one wanted to waste their time making an english soundtrack.)
