Life can be tough in London’s Soho district, especially if you’re a small time thief at the mercy of a crooked cop (Detective Brice, played by Vinnie Jones).
Played is the story of Ray Burns (Mick Rossi), the small time thief hired by Brice’s number one henchman (Riley, played by Patrick Bergin), to carry out a daring robbery. Something goes wrong on the job and two young men end up dead. Nothing would have been heard about this, except that one of the dead men is the favorite son of one of London’s biggest mob boss (Jack Rawlings, played by Roy Dotrice). Brice is soon under pressure from an internal investigation for the crime, and Riley tells him that a fall guy must be found. Ray Burns fits in perfectly and a warrant is issued for his arrest.
Ray is arrested and after spending eight silent years in jail, he’s now back on the streets, wanting revenge. Ray is recruited by Rawlings to kill Riley as revenge for his son’s death. Rawlings oufits Ray with everything he needs, including Riley’s whereabouts (Los Angeles) and one of his ‘acquaintances’ in Los Angeles (Eddie, played by Gabriel Byrne), who gets Ray the tools he needs to finish Riley off.
Ray goes to Los Angeles, where he locates Riley and shoots him. He is then brought in for questioning by Detectives Drummon and Allen (Anthony LaPaglia and Bruno Kirby) about Riley’s murder. Riley’s girl (Samantha, played by Sile Bermingham), is also brought in for questioning, but she has her own agenda -revenge- and Ray is on top of the list for killing Riley…Samantha catches up with Ray and shoots him, but ray survives and calls Eddie for help. Eddie’s “Clean Up” guy (Dillon, played by Val Kilmer) comes to help Ray, getting him safely back to England…but Brice now knows Ray killed Riley, and he puts out a hit on him. Ray is now being played for the finale, which is explosive and unexpected as more uninvited guests turn up for the showdown.
Played was released on DVD today.

Deep Water is the stunning true story of the first solo, non-stop, round-the-world boat race, and the psychological toll it took on its competitors. Sponsored by the Sunday Times of London, the much-ballyhooed event attracted a field of nine, including amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, who set out to circumnavigate the globe in late 1968. Battling treacherous seas and his own demons, Crowhurst almost immediately comes apart as he faces the isolation of nine months on the high seas. Part adventure yarn and part metaphysical mystery, Deep Water is an unforgettable journey into one man’s heart of darkness.
Deep Water opens in select screens in the US on August 24th.

He’s back! Director Uwe Boll returns to early career territory with this horror satire based on the video game in which a postal service employee embarks on a kill-and-destroy mission. Insulting, irreverent and politically incorrect, Postal follows two days in the life of the Postal Dude, in the regrettably named town of Paradise. After a humiliating job interview and a nearly lethal trip to the welfare office, Dude goes to see his Uncle Dave. Despite being the successful leader of the town cult, Dave is also in financial difficulties. Together they hatch a plan to rob an amusement park. Unfortunately, the much better organized and better-equipped Taliban has arrived in town for more sinister reasons. Things go haywire when Osama Bin Laden is forced to call in his friend George W Bush as back up and the Dude learns there is nothing that a well-timed nuclear explosion can’t solve.
Postal can be seen at at the FrightFest film festival in August.

In a flyblown African hospital, a man named John—or maybe Nick—wakes up with no memory of who, or what, he is. But it’s the “why” of his Kafkaesque experience that is at the centre of Amir Mann’s psychological trip through the netherworld of international terrorism. As the mysterious man’s memories slowly return, the tension mounts, creating a gloriously anxious atmosphere filled with shady characters and mixed loyalties.
The cast rises to the challenging material, creating characters that change their morality and your perception of them with every twist of the plot. Especially impressive are Nick Chinlund as the lead and Peter Bogdanovich in a brief but important supporting role.
A delightful, baffling, Gordian Knot of a film, The Fifth Patient will keep you guessing until the final moment. And even then you might want to watch it again, just to be sure of what you’ve seen…

Loma Lynda formed in Los Angeles in the fall of 2003, and under the direction of Jason Bognacki within a few short months of performing, the group caught the eye of programmers at the Sundance Film Festival, who, without hesitation, added Loma Lynda’s film and live musical score, Episode II, to the festival’s roster. This secured the group a place in cinematic and musical history, as the first rock band to not only perform at, but to also hold the esteemed title of “Official Selection of the Sundance Film Festival.” Critically acclaimed for their Sundance participation, Loma Lynda followed up with performances at the 2004 CMJ Music Marathon’s Film Festival, and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts’ Film Festival, where they were in the company of bands such as Radiohead, and Kraftwerk, and film’s such as Dig! and Bodysong.
Loma Lynda’s latest cinematic opus, Loma Lynda: The Red Door, is currently in the works.

Fear. Confusion. Anger. Grief. Sometimes Life Is War.
Set in Los Angeles during the opening days of the war in Iraq, These Days examines the lives of ordinary young Americans struggling to cope in a post 9-11 society. The film is told through a series of vignettes, from which four central stories emerge, each of the character’s lives distinctly linked to the next. These chance encounters build to a crescendo of emotion as the battle rages overseas, culminating with the fall of Saddam’s statue and Bush’s infamous declaration that the war is over.
