According to the IMDb, Ingmar Bergman’s Saraband was made for TV. But, I’ve just heard that Sony Classics are planning to release the film (in the US) in July.
Saraband stars Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson as Marianne and Johan from Bergman’s earlier film Scenes From a Marriage. Now it’s thirty years later and Marianne has gone on a trip to visit ex-husband Johan…
In Saraband, Marianne and Johan meet again after thirty years without contact, when Marianne suddenly feels a need to see her ex-husband again. She decides to visit Johan at his old summer house in the western province of Dalarna. And so, one beautiful autumn day, there she is, beside his reclining chair, waking him with a light kiss.
Also living at the summer house are Johan’s son Henrik and Henrik’s daughter Karin. Henrik is giving his daughter cello lessons and already sees her future as staked out. Relations between father and son are very strained, but both are protective of Karin. They are all still mourning Anna, Henrik’s much-loved wife, who died two years ago, yet who, in many ways, remains present among them. Marianne soon realizes that things are not all as they should be, and she finds herself unwillingly drawn into a complicated and upsetting power struggle.
“Saraband can be seen as a concerto grosso, a concert for full orchestra – only, here, with four soloists,” says Ingmar Bergman. “The drama consists of ten dialogues that follow a particular pattern, and it’s an attempt at analysis of a difficult situation.”
A saraband was an erotic dance for two that was very popular at royal courts in the 17th and 18th centuries. But it was prohibited in Spain as being indecent.

This looks good – a film by Jim Jarmusch and starring Bill Murray as a devoutly single man who receives a letter informing him that he’s a father…
Or, according to Focus Features who are producing the film…
In the new film from acclaimed writer/director Jim Jarmusch, which won the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival, Bill Murray stars as Don Johnston. The resolutely single Don has just been dumped by his latest lover, Sherry (Julie Delpy). Don yet again resigns himself to being alone and left to his own devices. Instead, he is compelled to reflect on his past when he receives by mail a mysterious pink letter. It is from an anonymous former lover and informs him that he has a 19-year-old son who may now be looking for his father. Don is urged to investigate this “mystery” by his closest friend and neighbor, Winston (Jeffrey Wright), an amateur sleuth and family man. Hesitant to travel at all, Don nonetheless embarks on a cross-country trek in search of clues from four former flames (Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, Sharon Stone, and Tilda Swinton). Unannounced visits to each of these unique women hold new surprises for Don as he haphazardly confronts both his past and, consequently, his present.
I’ve not been able to locate an official website as yet, but there is a Quicktime trailer online here

If it’s on TV it must be the Truth
From the producers of Y Ti Mama Tambien comes a shocking new thriller about the power of the media. Tabloid TV reporter, Manolo Bonilla (John Leguizamo) has traveled from Miami with his news crew on the trail of a story about a serial killer striking a small town in Ecuador. Convinced this story could be the ‘big one’ that makes him a network star, he is willing to bend the rules to get the facts. But the closer he gets to uncovering the truth, the more he finds his carefully planned story spinning dangerously out of control. Soon, Bonilla and his crew find themselves at the center of a frightening situation where even the best intentions can backfire. Featuring a pan-Latin cast and crew, Cronicas is written and directed by Sebastian Cordero and produced by acclaimed filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro.
This sounds good. This sounds very good. This sounds like the sort of film you get when you let the likes of Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro make a film about the media. There is a lot of good stuff coming out of Latin America at the moment, and this film looks like no exception.

Lee Byeong-Gu thinks his boss is an alien.
He may be right.
From the trailer, Save The Green Planet looks fantastic.
Lee Byeong-Gu (Shin Ha-Gyun, JSA) is a sensitive, blue collar sad sack hopped up on conspiracy theories and sci-fi films whose life has been derailed by one bad break after another. Yet he knows there’s no such thing as bad luck. The only thing that could have made such a mess of his life are…aliens. Nasty, disgusting aliens who have infiltrated human society. Sly aliens who are planning to destroy our planet at the next lunar eclipse. The one alien possessing the Royal Genetic Code needed to contact the Crown Prince and stop the destruction just happens to be his old boss, CEO of Yuje Chemicals, Kang Man-Shik (Baek Yun-Shik).
So with the help of his circus-performer girlfriend he sets out to kidnap Kang and torture him until he confesses to his alien identity and stops the invasion. Of course, it’s hard to confess to something that’s just a delusion in a sick man’s mind.
First time director Jang Jun-Hwan has marshaled every trick in his cinematic arsenal to unleash a full-out moviemaking assault on the audience. Shot for $4 million, this stylish flick looks like something Terry Gilliam would come up with if he were in a really bad mood.
And if that doesn’t scream ‘must see’ at you, I don’t know what does.

Pervert! is a Russ Meyer inspired comedy that claims to be possibly the most outrageous movie ever made!`
Sex. Death. Freedom. These three ingredients combine to create an orgiastic homage to the outrageous — perhaps the most outrageous movie ever to be committed to celluloid — Pervert! The shocking story of salacious scandal. An experimental explosion of mental mayhem. A bloodbath brimming with very big bubbles. A titillating travesty. A comedy of epic proportions equal only to those of its actresses. A morality play without morals. A cautionary tale lacking in caution yet abundant in tail.
Have Fun!

The final trailer for Takashi Miike’s Yôkai daisensô (Big Spook War) is now online and looking fantastic.
Twitch has a handy translation of the promotional flyer:
Over the years, there have been numerous hit films and other works with yôkai as their theme. With their bold entry into the world of Japanese film, the Kadokawa Group commemorates its 60th anniversary with the largest-scale fantasy adventure in Japanese film history, Yôkai Daisensô (Big Spook War).
After a strange turn of events, a bullied crybaby becomes “Kirin Sôshi”, righteous saviour of the world. In this battle of the century, Kirin Sôshi brings together the power of all the yôkai living in Japan to fight the Evil Spirit Army Corps (headed by Commander Katô Yasunori), who are scheming to destroy the world.

I have to admit to not knowing much about Horrors of War, but the synopsis sounds intriguing.
Feeling the pressure from Allied advance, Hitler unleashes his secret weapons. This movie follows a wayward soldier during World War II in the European theatre as the O.S.S. sends him to investigate Hitler’s arsenal of experiments.
And there are several trailers up, so go take a look…

I have to admit that I was avoiding Sky High a bit. On one hand, it brings together the likes of Bruce Campbell, Kurt Russell and even Lynda Carter. On the other hand, the ’school for superheroes’ idea does sound very much like a Disneyfied (read bland) take on the X-Men.
However, having finally caught the trailer (via The Movie Blog), I have to admit that I might give this film a go.
See for yourself…

Batman Begins is shaping up to be one of – if not the – best of 2005’s big budget films. It has a stellar cast, and – in David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan – a superb writer/director combination.
From the first trailer to be released, the film certainly looks like it is going to live up to its promise, but now AllDumb have managed to get hold of a massive ten minute trailer for the film. There’s no spoilers in it, but you wouldn’t believe how hyped I am for this film now.
