Vital

Vital
With Tetsuo : The Iron Man, Shinya Tsukamoto announced himself as one of the most original and extreme filmmakers of his generation to emerge from Japan - or anywhere.

Last year’s Snake of June was stunning and, from what I’ve heard so far, his next film, Vital, sounds like it’s going to be every bit as good.

The Japanese trailer for this film is now online and you can watch it here.

The Return of the King Extended Edition

G.O.R.A.

G.O.R.A.

G.O.R.A. is a superbly silly spoof of pretty much every science fiction film from Star Wars to The Matrix in which carpet salesman an tourist guide, Arif (Cem Yilmaz) is kidnapped by aliens - disguised as Charles and Diana - and taken to the planet Gora.

The film is packed with jokes and digs at a whole range of mainstream science fiction films - including itself. Not every joke hits the mark, the the ones that do are so outrageously funny that - when combined with the sheer energy of the film - make for a movie that is well worth seeing.

House of Flying Daggers

House of Flying Daggers 1 Sheet
Yimou Zhang may not consider himself as an expert action director, but Hero, his first foray into the wuxia genre was nothing short of spectacular. It was also a beautifully shot film with an effortlessly involving story. The teaser trailers for his next film, House of flying Daggers, seem to suggest that things are about to get better.

House of Flying Daggers is set in the year is 859 AD as China’s once flourishing Tang Dynasty is in decline. Unrest is raging throughout the land, and the corrupt government is locked in battle with rebel armies that are forming in protest. The largest, and most prestigious of these rebel groups is the House of Flying Daggers, which is growing ever more powerful under a mysterious new leader. Two local captains, Leo (Andy Lau Tak Wah) and Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) are ordered to capture the new leader and the two hatch an elaborate plan. Captain Jin will pretend to be a lone warrior called Wind and rescue the beautiful, blind revolutionary Mei (Zhang Ziyi) from prison, earning her trust and escorting her to the secret headquarters of the House of Flying Daggers. The plan works, but to their surprise, Jin and Mei fall deeply in love on their long journey to the House. Danger lurks in the forest surrounding them, and the wind is still, as if sensing the tension in the air. What lies ahead for Jin and Mei, these star-crossed lovers? If this is true love, then why are there plots in their heads, and secrets in their hearts?

The Magic Roundabout

 Joanna Lumley
Dougal and the gang are back, with an all new adventure which sees them embarking on an Indiana Jones style quest to capture the evil ZeeBadee.

I grew up with the original series and so the teaser trailer was a bit of a shock - all CGI with sets, backgrounds, landscapes and stuff. But I’ve just seen the full trailer for The Magic Roundabout and, dammit, I think this film is going to be great!

The Woodsman

The Woodsman
This film is probably going to have the Daily Mail screaming, but hopefully it will provoke some intelligent debate as well.

In The Woodsman, Kevin Bacon plays a convicted paedophile recently paroled and trying to rebuild his life. The trailer for this film is now online (here) and it’s powerful stuff.

Kevin Bacon is, in my opinion, an excellent actor and the film has already gathered a clutch of awards so I have high hopes for it, even though - or because - it promises to be a harrowing, yet powerful, film.

Imaginary Heroes

Imaginary Heroes

Starring Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Emile Hirsch, and Michelle Williams, Imaginary Heroes is a funny and poignant coming of age story in which the façade of an ordinary American family is peeled back to reveal that nothing is as it seems.

Tim Travis (Emile Hirsch) is walking through his life like it’s a bad dream. His mother Sandy (Sigourney Weaver) is the master of the Travis house — with a healthy drug habit, a decade long grudge, and a secret that is literally tearing her apart. His father Ben (Jeff Daniels) is a shell of the man he once was, crippled by circumstance and blind to the mistakes of his past.

But in typical American style, the Travises aren’t depressed — they’re living their lives in a forlorn haze. As painful revelations are made that threaten to divide the family, moments of laughter and truth provide the salve that ultimately bring them closer together.

The film will enjoy a one week starting on December 17th before its official release on February 18th, 2005.

In the meantime, enjoy the trailer…
