I was in Cardiff recently, so of course I went along and visited the Doctor Who Exhibition, which is well worth seeing if you happen to be in the area.

But if you aren’t in the area, you can more than make do with the complete first series in a TARDIS shaped box.

Wherever you go this summer, be sure to pack your PlayStation Portable and then you, too, can enjoy Red Dwarf - Smeg Ups, which was released in the UK yesterday.

Hosted by Kryten (Robert Llewellyn) and in a version never released on DVD, this package includes outtakes from Series IV to VI, as well as the Series VII Smeg Ups.

It’s a common enough occurrence: a science-fiction show that’s a little out of the ordinary is launched, starts to build an audience… and then get’s cancelled.

First shown in the US, Odyssey 5 ran for only 14 of its 20 episodes before being pulled, despite being the highest rating original series on the Showtime channel. The other six episodes were eventually shown two years later. In the UK, all 20 episodes were shown on both Sky One and the SciFi channel.

While in orbit around the Earth, the crew of Space Shuttle Odyssey witnesses the inconceivable: the complete annihilation of Earth in a fiery explosion. With one crew member dead, another suffering from a concussion, and only nine hours of oxygen left on the ship, the fate of the astronauts seems to be sealed. But then they encounter a mysterious alien entity known as The Seeker that informs them that populated planets across the universe are suffering the same cataclysmic fate as the Earth. Using its strange powers, The Seeker transports the five surviving members of the Odyssey back through time. The members of the crew wake up five years earlier; the Earth still exists, but they all share the same awful memory of what lies in store. Seeking each other out, they must discover the secret of the Bright Sky and figure out the meaning of the last message sent from Earth, a coded warning about something known as Leviathan. If they can’t solve the mystery then history will repeat, and the world will end in inferno.

Much praised and much missed after its premature cancellation, Firefly is the first SF TV series to be conceived by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and cocreator of Angel. Set five centuries in the future, it is a show where the mysterious personal pasts of the crew of the tramp spaceship Serenity continually surface. In fact, it’s a Western in space where the losers in a Civil War are heading out to a barren frontier. Mal Reynolds is a man embittered by the war, yet whose love of his comrades perpetually dents his cynicism - even in the 14 episodes that exist we see him warm to the bubbly young mechanic Kaylee, the preacher Book, the idealistic doctor Simon, even to the often demented River, Simon’s sister, the psychic result of malign experiments.

Firefly is also about adult emotional relationships, for example Kaylee’s crush on Simon, the happy marriage of Mal’s second officer Zoe and the pilot Wash, the disastrous erotic stalemate between Mal and the courtesan Inara. Individual episodes deal with capers going vaguely wrong, or threats narrowly circumvented; character and plot arcs were starting to emerge when the show was cancelled.

From the very first episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and throughout the course of its run of almost a decade, the show set the standard for quality television entertainment. Picking up where the relatively disappointing film left off, the show followed Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) on her quest to rid the world of vampires, demons, and various other evil beings. A small band of friends were there to help her out, which included the vampire convert Angel (David Boreanaz), vampire and ambivalent love interest Spike (James Marsters), popular girl Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), regular guy Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and everyone’s favourite intellectual Willow (Alyson Hannigan).

This collection includes all seven seasons of the show and over 100 hours of vampire bashing, allowing fans to trace the evolution of Buffy’s relationships, fashion sense, and success at battling her true demon: her strong desire to be normal.

I saw this and thought Fantastic! And then I noticed that this is Volume 17. And it’s a Region 1 DVD.

I think we should start campaigning to get one of Britain’s most groundbreaking characters back onto a Region 2 DVD collection.
