Fahrenheit 9/11

Fahrenheit 9/11
DVD review: Fahrenheit 9/11

In cinemas, Fahrenheit 9/11 broke records and arguably became more of a force in US politics than any previous documentary film.

Now, it comes to a wider audience on DVD, during the last weeks before the 2004 US Presidential election.

While the release date comes as no surprise, what is unexpected is just how irritating the film can be.

Fahrenheit 9/11 undoubtedly makes good points and highlights interesting facts, but film-maker Michael Moore is the one reason why it may never have quite the impact it perhaps should have.

American Dream, Global Nightmare

American Dream, Global Nightmare

Ranging from the vision of the Founding Fathers to the myth-making machine of Hollywood, the book investigates the persistent dream in which America is determined to live, and the dangerous ’sleep of reason’ necessary to sustain it. America’s cultural delusions are a grotesque imbalance between fantasy and reality, a danger to us all as, propelled by power, mythology and paranoia, the US pursues its dream of empire. As recent events in Iraq and elsewhere have shown, it is a dream whose dark side is death, suffering, perpetual fear, an increasing divide between rich and poor, a squandering of the human future, and the relentless building of more and more pretexts for future wars.

According to The Independent

This work, by a pair of British authors, does just that, with a forensic detachment that’s far too cool and curious to deserve an “anti-American” tag. Sardar and Wyn Davies (collaborators to the bestselling Why Do People Hate America?) reveal and dissect the fundamental beliefs that fuel Republicans and Democrats, liberals and neocons, alike. They take their framework from Hollywood, viewed as the central factory of American myths for worldwide export. Chapters enlist the plots and themes of movies - from The Player to Groundhog Day - to explore the meanings and effects of American dreams and (as the authors claim) delusions.

… which sounds interesting.

Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance and the Rise of Independent Film

Down and Dirty Pictures

In the late 1980s a generation of filmmakers inspired by the directors of the 1970s began to flower outside the studio system. In the following decade, the independent movement bloomed. Steven Soderbergh, Quentin Tarantino and dozens of lesser-known filmmakers began walking away with prizes at Cannes and eventually at the Academy Awards. Many of these directors were discovered at Robert Redford’s Sundance film festival and were scooped up by Harvey and Bob Weinstein, whose company, Miramax, laid waste to the competition. In this volume Peter Biskind tells the story of the filmmakers and the independent distributors who revitalized Hollywood over the 1990s. He follows the growth of the Sundance from a regional film festival to the premier showcase of independent film that it became, showing how it succeeded almost despite Redford, whose visionary plans were often thwarted by his quixotic personality. He charts the meteoric rise of the controversial Harvey Weinstein, often described as the last mogul who, with his brother, left a trail of carnage in his wake, yet created an Oscar factory that is the envy of the studios.
