Christian kills blasphemy law

Scene from Jerry Springer: The Opera After two years of frothing at the mouth, Stephen Green’s campaign against Jerry Springer: The Opera has finally been killed by the high court.

After the musical was aired on BBC2 way back in 2005, Green announced that he was going to sue the corporation for blasphemy. A year later, he finally managed to scrape some cash together to bring a case and was promptly told to stop being so silly. He appealed and today the High Court has agreed that he should stop being so silly.

[T]he two senior judges at the High Court said the 1968 Theatres Act prevented any prosecution for blasphemy in relation to public performances of plays.

The 1990 Broadcasting Act, they continued, prevented any prosecution in relation to broadcasts.

Admittedly, the title of this post is misleading - Green hasn’t completely killed the Blasphemy law, but he has managed to establish that it doesn’t apply to theatres or broadcasts. So well done, Steve.
