Nutter attempts to revive Jerry Springer The Opera prosecution
Back in January, Christian fundamentalist, Stephen Green’s attempt to prosecute the BBC over their transmission of Jerry Springer: The Opera was thrown out of court.
But now, as MediaWatchWatch reports, he’s back after a high court judge overturned the original magistrate’s decision not to allow the prosecution to go ahead.
Mr Justice Underhill ruled that the original ruling was wrong on one of the two point’s of law on which it was based and arguable on the other. The judge went on to say: “I should in the circumstances of this case emphasise that I am saying no more than that the challenge to the District Judge’s decision was arguable. That does not necessarily mean that it will succeed; still less that any eventually prosecution would succeed.”
Ekklesia points out that the vast majority of those who complained about Jerry Springer: The Opera hadn’t seen it and that the case, when it was originally brought, aroused strong opposition to censorship and blasphemy laws.
Hopefully this trial will be the final nail in the coffin for Britain’s archaic blasphemy legislation.
