No dead men in China
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest has been banned in China, although no-one seems to be sure why yet.
Reports from China’s media suggest the movie, which took a swashbuckling $132m (£71m) in its first three days Stateside, fell foul of the censors due to its violent and supernatural content. But, according to the Shanghai Daily, citing a cinema company official, the ban resulted from censors’ objection to the portrayal of human cannibalism.
Either way, the film still has an outside chance of making it past the censors if it passes a second round of examination. The daily Beijing News claims that the Film Bureau particularly disliked the portrayal of the souls of the dead - the ghost Davy Jones and his crew of lost sailors are depicted as half-human, half-aquatic creatures in the film.
Disney Hong Kong are still trying to confirm why the film has been banned and have not issued a comment so far.
