Actors seek police protection from Christians
The Scotsman reports that that producers of Corpus Christi, currently playing at C Electric as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, had been forced to seek advice from the police on providing security for their actors after protesters targeted previous productions.
The play, which features a gay Jesus Christ, attracted protests when it toured America and other parts of Scotland earlier in the year.
Director Zsuzsi Lindsay told the News: “In America, we had a few protesters from a local church who we invited to talk to us about the play, and many of them actually went away wondering why they had been protesting.
“But in St Andrews, the people didn’t want to know and they were outside every night and actually tracked down our directors to their homes, which was quite scary.”
Bruce McNally, an Edinburgh member of the group Christian Voice, which was involved in the protests against the show in St Andrews, said he would expect people to boycott the show and added: “I am quite surprised that this kind of material is being brought to the Fringe, especially with the new religious hatred Bill going through Parliament, as it is deeply offensive to many people.”
Personally, I find going to people’s homes to threaten them even more offensive. It’s also a crime.
