Film at Eleven

Two films have just been released on DVD that are worth checking out.

The Horror Vault (review, trailer) brings together nine films around a common theme of madness and cruelty and it’s well worth looking into and one which manages to maintain a consistently high standard throughout. From executive producers Ridley Scott and Tony Scott comes The Andromeda Strain, the edge-of-your seat, four-hour miniseries about a team of scientists investigating a deadly disease from an alien world that threatens to destroy mankind.

Debuting as an original A&E television event on May 26 and 27, The Andromeda Strain features an outstanding cast featuring Benjamin Bratt, Christa Miller, Eric McCormack, Ricky Schroder, Andrew Braugher, and Viola Davis.

Directed by Mikael Saloman and based on the best-selling novel by Michael Crichton, the DVD will be released as a two-disc set in Dolby 5.1 Surround that combines the complete uninterrupted four-hour presentation with a thrilling behind-the-scenes look at the production.

When you want to guarantee death only a bulldozer will do as Police Inspector Peretti (George Hilton) discovers when he investigates a headless body that’s recently lost a fight with a digger. As he further excavates into the case Peretti discovers a disturbing link with the murder of a young girl, but the further he delves the more the bodies pile up as the killer embarks on a murderous trail of DIY devastation.

This is the only Giallo thriller that spaghetti western director Tonino Valerii made but in one attempt he created an absorbingly complex and delightfully twisted take on the genre that’s delivered with flair and considerable tension.

My Dear Killer will be released in the UK on 14th April by the good folks at Shameless Screen Entertainment.

Universal Pictures (UK) will release Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales on DVD on 31st March 2008.
