Joss Whedon has Faith in TV
Here’s some cracking news for anyone who likes intelligent, well-scripted genre TV. Joss Whedon has signed a deal with Fox to create Dollhouse, which will chronicle the exploits of a group of individuals who are “imprinted with personality packages.” And the star of this 21st century version of Joe 90 will be none other than Eliza Dushku.
The Dollhouse of the title is a guarded laboratory in which the memory-erased individuals are kept between missions. Dushku’s character, Echo, however is slowly gaining consciousness.
“We call it a suspense-drama-mythology-comedy-action-horror musical,” Whedon half-jokes of the show, which will bend and blend genres in typical Joss fashion. “The main thrust is the thruline of Echo as a sort of newly born character who goes, ‘Wait a minute — I exist. Wow. So who would I be? And how dangerous is it for me to let anybody know that I know that I exist?’ Not unlike the Frankenstein myth, it’s, ‘Who made me, who am I, and why am I?’”
Whedon does have a real talent for developing the sort of extended story arcs that work well in TV drama, so this could prove to be a series well worth watching out for.
