Barbarella on hold. Again
despite the flop that was Grindhouse, Robert Rodriguez is still determined to cast Rose McGowan as Barbarella in his previously mentioned remake of the film.
However, the director who is normally notorious for achieving a lot for very little is asking for more money than Universal are prepared to stump up. According to CHUD:
Universal is reportedly willing to finance the movie up to $60 million, but Rodriguez, ready to not be famous for doing things on the cheap, is said to figure that ain’t enough. This is complex Grindhouse fallout, but really, can anyone see Universal ever giving up that much money to Rodriguez, even before the failure of Grindhouse?
Frankly, I think Universal are right here. Barbarella is a cheap, campy and very silly film - and it’s this cheap cheerfulness that makes it so much fun. As soon as someone starts looking for tens of millions of dollars for a remake then we’re in bog-standard blockbuster territory and there really isn’t any point in continuing.
