Aardman and Dreamworks to seperate
Aardman Animation and Dreamworks have parted company three films into a five film deal. The reason, according to Aardman spokesman Arthur Sheriff, was Dreamworks’ move to focus on computer animation.
This is not entirely surprising, but it is disappointing. CGI animation is clearly a much faster process than the claymation approach at which Aardman excels but Aardman’s films have much more than a recognisable style and a very English sense of humour. They also have solid plots and great characters - if nothing else, Aardman’s films are good stories well told. And in a world where far too many studios are desperately trying to make their ‘product’ just like everyone else’s (same look, same jokes, same plots) Aardman provides a much needed dose of originality to the genre.
Seriously, how many more films do Dreamworks think they are going to be able to extract from their (already tired) Shrek franchise?
