Still You may have noticed that I do like films that make you think, especially if those films deal with real social issues. As such, upcoming film Justin’s Genes from director Chaand Chazelle looks set to hit all the right notes as far as I am concerned.

The inspiration for the film was from a real tragic event of Michael Menson, a black musician who was assaulted, robbed and then horrifically burnt alive in 1997 by 3 white youths from North London. From this, the film takes a potentially controversial look at questions of race and genes.

Set in London. Justin’s Genes tells the story of Duncan Beckford, a London-born geneticist. Duncan’s parents came to Britain from Trinidad in the 1960′s. They worked hard to provide their two sons Duncan and Justin with a proper British Eduction to give them a better life. However Duncan’s brother Justin is car jacked and burnt alive by four white youths. This sets him off on a quest to safeguard his unborn child’s mortality. As a geneticist he resorts to science and his knowledge of genetics to protect his child.

Chaand Chazelle has lived in London for 37 years and this film reflects her experience of living in this country. She has dealt with  thousands of racial violence cases while she worked within the british justice system. Many of the events she experiences through her son growing up in this country.

Justin’s Genes is currently in production.
